Scuba News: The Youngest Master Diver

Scuba News: The Youngest Master Diver

Posted by William Taylor on on 2nd Jan 2023

On December 31st, 2022 a 12 year old girl in Dubai became the youngest Master Diver in the world and completed the test on her birthday.

Divers are allowed to get their Master Divers certification from the age of 12 and need at least 5 specialty courses under your belt. Not only did the British national, Ellie May Craig, complete all of the specialties required, she was able to do it in less than two years.

A part of the certification test is to locate a ‘missing’ dive instructor and rescue the distressed diver while providing CPR. Ellie told The National, “It was exhausting — both the tasks in the swimming pool and in the sea. It took me all of 11 hours to finish everything. But I was determined to break the record.”

The tests are extremely hard to complete in just one day but in order to beat the previous record holder, Toby Monteiro-Hourigan who completed the test just one day after his birthday, Ellie needed to complete and pass the test on the 31st.

This isn't her only record though. Back in 2020, Ellie was the youngest person to pass a Scuba Diving test at the age of 10 and also the youngest female Open Water Diver.

We congratulate Ellie on her wonderful achievements and love to see the next generation have such a deep interest in Scuba.
