Scuba diving is more than a job for me – it's a lifestyle. If you’ve ever wondered if being a Scuba Diving Instructor is really the dream job, here are 10 reasons why I love it:
1. My Office Has the Best View
Do you ever get bored of sitting in front of a computer all day? As a diving instructor, my “office” is the vast, beautiful ocean. I have the freedom to switch up my environment whenever I want, and each dive brings something new. It’s not just an office – it’s a whole new world waiting to be explored every single day.
2. Teaching and Sharing My Passion
Being an SDI Scuba Instructor means I get to do what I love – teach! I get to share my passion for scuba diving with others, helping people discover the beauty of the underwater world. Whether it's explaining buoyancy control or the effects of pressure, I love working with different people and figuring out how to communicate these complex concepts in ways that resonate with each individual. The excitement and gratitude I see in my students' faces after their first dive is an experience that never gets old!
3. Flexible Working Hours
The life of a diving instructor may look like non-stop adventure, but there's a lot of behind-the-scenes work that goes into it. From prepping equipment to answering emails, we often work long hours. However, the great thing about being a diving instructor is the flexibility to arrange my schedule and set aside time for myself. I can plan my work around my passions, making room for training or an impromptu adventure.
4. Stay Active and Fit
Being a scuba diving instructor isn’t just about teaching – it’s also about staying in shape. From carrying tanks to assisting divers in and out of the water, every day offers physical challenges. As an active person, I enjoy setting aside time for personal training to ensure I’m physically prepared for the job. Plus, staying fit gives me the stamina to handle all the physical tasks diving instructors face.
5. Meet Fellow Ocean Lovers
Scuba diving is one of the most social sports out there. As a diving instructor, I meet divers from all over the world who share the same passion for the ocean and marine life. It’s a great way to connect with people, make new friends, and learn about different cultures and perspectives – all while sharing a love for the underwater world!
6. Travel While You Work
I’ve always dreamed of a job that allows me to travel – and being an SDI Scuba Instructor lets me do just that. With dive sites all over the world, I can teach in new, exotic locations whenever I like. I get to explore remote reefs, marine ecosystems, and countries while working with incredible people. It truly is the perfect balance of work and adventure. Wherever I go, there’s always a new dive location waiting to be discovered!
7. Witnessing the Wonders of Underwater Life
Diving allows me to witness the stunning, mysterious life under the sea. Over 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water, and the ocean is teeming with life. Each dive brings the excitement of seeing something new, whether it’s vibrant coral reefs, playful sea creatures, or rare sightings like the awe-inspiring Mola Mola (ocean sunfish) – crossing that off my bucket list was an unforgettable moment!
8. Part of a Supportive Dive Community
Diving isn't just about the sport – it's about the community. Diving communities are full of passionate, supportive people who love the ocean and the environment. In Malaysia, for instance, we work together to remove ghost nets from dive sites and protect our reefs. Being part of this global network of divers who care about the ocean and each other is incredibly fulfilling.
9. Be a Role Model
As an SDI Scuba Instructor, I’ve become a role model to many of my students. People often ask me how they can follow in my footsteps, and I’m always happy to share my journey. It’s a privilege to be a part of their scuba journey, guiding them and opening their eyes to a world they may never have imagined. Helping others discover their passion for diving is one of the most rewarding aspects of my job.
10. Living Life to the Fullest
At the end of the day, the best part of being a diving instructor is the enjoyment. I love seeing the joy on my students’ faces after their dives, whether it’s their first time or they’ve dived with me before. As I always say, "You Only Live Once" – so why not live it to the fullest? I get to inspire others, share the wonders of the underwater world, and have a blast while doing it. Being a scuba diving instructor is the best decision I’ve ever made!
