How to Pre-Treat Your New Mask BEFORE Using Defogger
Posted by Scuba Pro: William Taylor on on 23rd Feb 2023
Scuba diving is an exciting and adventurous sport that takes you to explore the underwater world. One of the most critical pieces of gear for a successful dive is a scuba mask. It helps you see clearly underwater and keeps water out of your eyes and nose. However, manufactures all place a thin layer on film on your new mask which must be removed before you take it into the water. Although it is impossible to see, it must be removed to decrease the excess fogging the film causes. With the film left on, the film will reduce visibility and cause discomfort, ruining your dive. In this article, we'll provide a step-by-step guide to remove the film from a new scuba mask to ensure it offers clear visibility and provides a comfortable fit. WATCH HOW TO VIDEO
Step 1: Test the Mask Fit
Before you purchase the mask it is important to always test it in your local dive shop. Once you picked one out it's time to test the fit to ensure that it's comfortable and provides a leak-free dive. To test the fit, put the mask on your face and inhale gently through your nose. If the mask forms a tight seal against your face and doesn't leak, it's ready to use. If the mask leaks, repeat the process and try another mask. Scubapro is a brand that tends to fit most people but do try out everything your local shop has to offer.
Step 2: Clean the Mask
Before removing the film from your mask, it's essential to clean it to remove any oils, dust, or debris that may have accumulated on it during manufacturing or transportation. Use a mild soap and water to wash the mask, making sure to clean the lens and skirt. Rinse the mask thoroughly with warm water to remove all soap residue. Avoid using any harsh chemicals, as they can damage the mask's silicone rubber.
Step 3: Dry the Mask
Once you've washed and rinsed the mask, it's important to dry it completely before removing the film. Air-dry the mask by placing it on a clean, dry towel or hang it up by the strap to allow air to circulate. Avoid using a towel to dry the mask, as it can leave lint or fibers on the lens and skirt, which can cause leaks.
Step 4: Remove the FilmThe film on the lens of a new mask is usually installed to decrease the number of damaged lenses during production and will fog up excessively if the film is not scrubbed off. To remove the film, you'll need a few household items: tooth paste, water, soft sponge.
To remove the film, start by spreading toothpaste throughout the inside of your lens. Using a soft sponge, gently rub the paste onto the lens, making sure to cover the entire surface. Be careful not to rub too hard, as you don't want to scratch the lens. Let the paste sit on the lens for 5 to 10 minutes, then rinse the lens thoroughly with warm water. Repeat this process if necessary until the film is completely removed. Tip: breath onto the mask after ever rinse to see your progress!

Step 5: Dry the Mask Again
Once you've removed the film, it's important to dry the mask again. Air-dry the mask by placing it on a clean, dry towel or hang it up by the strap to allow air to circulate. Avoid using a towel to dry the mask, as it can leave lint or fibers on the lens and skirt, which can cause leaks.
Step 6: Store the Mask
After you've tested the fit and the mask is ready to use, it's important to store it properly to protect it from damage and to extend its life. Store the mask in a clean, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Avoid storing the mask in a wet or damp place, as this can cause mold and mildew to grow.By following these steps, you can effectively remove the film from a new scuba mask and ensure that it offers clear visibility and a comfortable fit. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced diver, having a well maintained mask is an important way to keep your dives nice and comfortable.
