AB 1832: Seabed Mining Ban (L. Rivas)

Posted by William Taylor on on 3rd Dec 2022

Assembly Bill 1832 was passed and approved by Governor Newsom on September 19th 2022 to prevent and ban all current and future seabed mining off the coast of California. Seabed Mining is the recovery of rare earth materials such as sulfur and zinc. These methods are extremely destructive to the environment and have led to parts of the ocean becoming inhabitable.

The ocean's seafloor is considered one of the richest ecosystems in the world. Seabed Mining (SBM) is a massive threat to these ecosystems and oftentimes leave areas uninhabitable as habitats are destroyed and a barren landscape remains. Assemblymember Luz Rivas of North Hollywood said that “Seabed mining is not just an ecological danger, it is also an economic threat to our communities,”.

Now that California has finally followed in the footsteps of Washington and Oregon, the entire west coast is safe from seabed mining further preventing harm and destruction on the west coast of the United States. This was just the first of many battles as Seabed Mining is still a massive threat to our oceans around the world.

Special thanks to Monterey Bay Aquarium, Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis and Surfrider Foundation for sponsoring AB 1832.
